Description

Vyvanse 30mg is mainly a prescription medication used for treating attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in children and adults and, in some cases, for moderate to severe binge eating disorder in adults. Vyvanse works by increasing attention and decreasing impulsiveness and hyperactivity in patients with ADHD. It functions as a central nervous system stimulant and is very important in the management of symptoms that can drastically affect daily life by improving focus and control over behavior.

Indications and Uses 

Vyvanse 30 mg is indicated for the treatment of ADHD in patients aged six years and older. It is also prescribed for adults with moderate to severe BED. Vyvanse does this by enhancing focus and decreasing impulsivity so that symptoms of ADHD are better controlled, enabling performance to improve at school, work, and in social situations. At the same time, in BED patients, Vyvanse reduces the number of binge eating days and thus sustains healthy patterns of eating.

Dosage and Administration

The recommended starting dose for Vyvanse to treat ADHD is 30 mg administered once daily in the morning. The dose may be increased at weekly intervals in increments of 10 mg or 20 mg per day up to 70 mg/day. The starting dose for BED in adults is also 30 mg per day and weekly titration is allowed. Dosage is increased weekly by increments of 10 mg and 20 mg, according to response and tolerability to a maximum of 70 mg per day. The prescribing physician’s instructions are important to follow, and Vyvanse should not be taken in the afternoon or evening as it may lead to insomnia.

Mechanism of Action

Vyvanse, lisdexamfetamine, works in the system by conversion to dextroamphetamine to result in increasing neurotransmitters dopamine and norepinephrine in the brain. This increases inter-neuronal communication to enhance attention, reduce impulsivity, and reduce hyperactivity specifically in people with ADHD. With BED, this increased activity of neurotransmitters helps to modulate the reward system in the brain controlling binge eating urges.

Side Effects

Among the common side effects of Vyvanse 30mg are decreased appetite, dry mouth, sleeplessness, and additional heartbeats. Some patients may also exhibit symptoms of anxiety, dizziness, or gastrointestinal issues. The most dangerous side effects that a patient may encounter include severe allergic reactions to the drug, heart difficulties, and psychotic complications such as hallucinations or incidents of maniacal episodes. Patients should report all unusual or severe side effects to a doctor for proper attention and management.

Warnings and Precautions 

Vyvanse should be prescribed with much caution in patients who have had cardiovascular events, hypertension, or psychiatric illnesses. Not for use during pregnancy unless the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. If a breastfeeding mother should mention this to the treating doctor; Vyvanse passes into breast milk. The patient must avoid alcohol and shall bring to the attention of the doctor all medications being taken to avoid possible drug interactions.

Storage Instructions

Vyvanse 30mg should be stored at room temperature: 68°F to 77°F (20°C to 25°C); in the original container; tightly closed; and out of the reach of children and pets. Protect from light and moisture. Do not store it in the bathroom. Proper storage will help the drug remain as effective and safe as possible. Discard unused medication or expired medication per local regulations or return it to a pharmacy take-back program.
